Elementary School Programs
- The first objective is to screen all students and collect data on their oral health status. Our staff then triages the students into three categories: no visible decay; visible decay; and urgent dental needs. The students with urgent dental needs are immediately referred to the school nurse with the intent of contacting parents.
- The second objective is to reduce the number of students with untreated decay by making cavity prevention services available to any student with parental consent, and providing those services at school. Sealants and fluoride varnish are proven to be effective at reducing cavities by over 85%.
- The third objective is to reduce the number of students who return the next year with the same untreated decay that was noted in the previous year. Two part time dentists were added to the teams to provide exams and recommend interim treatment. Using a special kind of sealant material, “temporary” sealants are placed to stop cavities from getting bigger, and halt the process of the decay-causing germs.

Smiles For Life – Kitsap County
Smiles for Life is an oral health program for older adults held twice monthly at the Bainbridge Island Senior Community Center. The objective for this program is to provide low-income seniors an affordable alternative for routine oral health services. There is virtually no access to affordable dental care in Kitsap County for adults, and more and more patients are utilizing emergency rooms at Harrison Hospital and elsewhere. Emergency dental care is painful, preventable, and more expensive to treat. Preventive dental services are provided to older adults at reduced fees or on a sliding fee scale based on income. An expanded program, which will include basic dental services for Smiles for Life patients, is in development. See a web site news break when the expanded program is announced.
International Rescue Committee – Tukwila
A summer program focused on providing care to newly arrived refugees being resettled in the United States from various refugee camps around the world. In 2011, refugees were from Bhutan, Nepal, Myanmar, and Iraq.
